Balenciaga gave a foretaste to the audience how our life would look if there was a flood at its fashion show held on the weekend.
Balenciaga hosted the show of his fall-winter 2020 collection in Saint-Denis quarter of Paris, at Cité du Cinéma film studio. Head designer Demna Gvasalia designed an apocalyptic set surrounding the Matrix style leather jackets, tight-fitting clothes and football jerseys, this way raising the awareness of the audience of Paris Fashion Week to climate change and rising ocean levels.
This time, the front row was left empty: as part of the set, the first two rows of the auditorium were covered in water, and the viewers could see from the third row how the models strutted down the runway in ankle-deep water.
In addition to the flooded venue, visuals also recalled the end of the world: flooding oceans, flames and sea of lava. At least the plenty of water used for the show will not go into waste, as it will be further utilized as greywater in Paris.
