This device produces oxygen from the atmosphere of Mars

The NASA-developed experimental equipment of the Perseverance Mars rover, MOXIE was successful in its first test: it extracted oxygen from the atmosphere of the red planet.

The electrolysis device produces oxygen from carbon dioxide. In the first test, the device produced 5.4 grams of oxygen that would be able to keep an astronaut alive for ten minutes. The thin Martian atmosphere is made up of 96% carbon dioxide, while oxygen is only present in 0.13%. The future’s oxygen generators must be approximately 100 times larger than the MOXIE to successfully support the human exploration of the red planet.
