Carpathia | Nicholas J R White

British photographer Nicholas J R White documented the formation of a new European Wilderness Reserve in his recent series titled “Carpathia”.

After logging companies bought up a significant share of Romania’s forests in the early 2000’s, nature suffered devastating loss and damage. In response to this crisis, Foundation Conservation Carpathia (FCC) was founded with the aim of protecting and restoring the forests of the Southern Carpathians by creating a new European Wilderness Reserve. Since then, FCC has acquired more than 21,000 hectares of forests, created a hunting-free zone of 36,000 hectares, and planted over 1.5 million saplings.

The “Carpathia” series is a photo documentation of this process and the work done. In the photographer’s words:

“Scenes of delicate interactions with the land, set against the magnificence of the Carpathian landscape, emphasize the mammoth undertaking by FCC and act as a visual archive of the rebirth of European wilderness.”
