László Moholy-Nagy, the major intellectual and technical innovator and world-famous Hungarian artist was born on July 20 125 years ago. His oeuvre is well-known in many countries of the world, his pieces are sold for record prices at auctions, and the exhibitions compiled of his artworks has attracted large audiences in the greatest museums of London, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles in the past years. There is one thing not many people know about this dominant experimenter and innovative artist of the 20th century: the fact that he was Hungarian.

On the occasion of the anniversary, Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) named after the artist has prepared an extraordinary audiovisual campaign, to be presented on July 20, on László Moholy-Nagy’s birthday.

For the occasion, the university pays tribute to the timeless validity of Moholy-Nagy’s ideas with a report film titled Moholy-Nagy 125, a 125-minute-long animation titled Moholymotion, dozens of interviews and video messages and an interactive website bringing all these together.

The initiative features such prominent figures of Hungarian art and cultural life as art historian Krisztina Passuth, visual artist Dóra Maurer, director of Ludwig Museum Julia Fabényi, architect Zsófia Csomay, MOME rector József Fülöp, cultural manager Károly Gerendai and graphic artist István Orosz. In addition to the members of the Moholy family, renowned professionals of the international art scene such as Karole P. B. Vail, director of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice and Annemarie Jaeggi, director of Bauhaus Archive in Berlin also participate in the commemoration.

The premiere screening will be hosted by Urania Film Theater at the opening night of the series of events on July 16th. The film produced by MOME will be accompanied by the Hungarian premiere of The New Bauhaus, an American documentary about László Moholy-Nagy.

The online commemoration on July 20 will be followed by additional events in the fall at the new campus of MOME handed over in September last year. Those interested will be able to learn more about these on the website launching on the same day.
