Nenad Fabijanic I Kastav

The Crekvina monastery ruins are located to the north of Rijeka, next to Kastav, for the renovation and alteration of which Nenad Fabijanic prepared designs back in 2008. The construction works were carried out last year: a lookout tower and a cultural event facility was established on the hill above Kvarner bay.

We have little and contradictory information about the original church: it was built sometime during the 18th century, but if our sources are correct, it was never fully completed. The terrace gives home to cultural events during the summer, while the lookout tower operates all year. The entire development is a good example how a facility that was never really in operation could be brought back to life. The designer used the original local stone for the alteration, and complemented it with Corten steel, resulting in a quite fine composition.
