Róbert Farkas’ Budapest in Monocle magazine

The graphic designer and illustrator working under the name Astronaut has made special maps highlighting the main locations in relation to several films – first about Twin Peaks. A few years after, he was contacted by Computer Arts and then by Monocle magazine to draw a unique, yet informative map of Budapest.

In the latest 127th issue of Monocle, the special British travel magazine, readers can find a several-page-long Budapest feature with local design product ideas, important sights, good restaurants and a great city map, designed by Róbert Farkas.

The magazine found the Hungarian graphic designer via his website, where they have certainly seen his former map projects, too. The job was quite urgent, and Robi had three evenings to draw this fantastic map of Budapest.

“As a matter of fact I was given a free hand in design, they only set out the locations to be placed on the map and the recommended color palette (red, white, green) out of which I have changed white to yellow and added dark blue. I also expanded the list of sights displayed on the map. Originally, the Castle Garden and the Citadel were not highlighted, so I recommended them, partially because they gave a lot fewer locations on the Buda side, and partially because I consider these the important sights of the city, which are worth to be shown to tourists visiting Budapest. Otherwise my favorites were Liberty Bridge and the Parliament – I loved drawing them. The hardest part was to abstract the Fisherman’s Bastion and its stairways – I have drawn them many times until I was finally satisfied with them” – Robi told us.
