120° – Moholy 120

Ezzel a videóval szeretnénk megemlékezni idén, július 20.-án, a művész születésének 120. évfordulójára.

On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of his birth, I have transformed the geometric and constructivist paintings of László Moholy-Nagy into 3D. His first independent volume in the Bauhausbücher series, called Painting, photography, film – is characterised by the duality of visuality and verbality, as well as it explores the traditional and upcoming styles. My aim was to process his works in a similar, complex way.

“The traditional picture has become historical and it belongs now to the past.”

In spite of this statement, Moholy had created his most picturesque and beautiful paintings during his early years at Bauhaus. Even though he wanted to bury painting in the spirit of constructivism, it seems he wasn’t fully able to. Moholy believed the discovery of photography divided the picture and the portrayal of colours. While the photography and the film shape the picture, “the painting has the chance to deal with the articulate formation of the colours.”

On the occasion of the anniversary, I animated six of his paintings in 120 degrees. Although the colours and the geometric shapes form the basis of my video, they offered me the opportunity to imagine how the compositions of Moholy would work in space. With the help of some 3D graphics, I could visualise certain forms and movements which are implied, but hidden in the original, two-dimensional paintings.

We would like to remember with this short video on the 120-year anniversary of the artist’s birth.
