London’s first floating church is completed

Architecture, boat building, religious community space and contemporary design – the floating church installed in a port in East London offers all these in one.

The members of St. Columbia community in East London could occupy an unusual church – and Londoners en bloc, as Genesis Floating Church could not only serve as a venue for practicing one’s religion, but for various community programs, too.

According to Murray Kerr, the director of architect studio Denizen Works designing the church, they dreamt up the minimalist, gallery-like space along this concept exactly: “Our approach to the interior was to create a gallery space, free from religious symbolism, so that it would be welcoming to all, to align with the wider community uses planned for the boat.“ The interior of the boat draws on traditional church layouts greatly, at the same time it can be easily transformed to serve various purposes owing to the mobile, custom-made furnishing.
