The first garments made of mushroom-based vegan leather | Stella McCartney

As a dedicated vegan and environmentalist, Stella McCartney has never used animal fur or leather throughout her fashion brand’s twenty-year history. Now, in collaboration with Mylo Unleather, she took a huge step towards the future of sustainable fashion: they created vegan leather clothes made of mushrooms.

Although mushroom mycelium has been used in the past to make handbags and watch straps, these are the first wearable garments made of this material.

Mycelium is grown from the underground root structure of the fungus, and the manufacturing process is designed to have the least environmental impact possible. It only takes mulch, air, water and a few weeks of time for the raw material to develop.

Although the fashion industry still has a long way to go in order to reverse its environmental impact, the designer would like to demonstrate that by leaving leather and synthetic alternatives behind completely, significant progress can be made in this area.
