Nike’s iconic Air Max 1 sneaker is not only an incredible success story of the company, but a huge landmark in the history of modern shoe design, too. Studio Dorothy now condensed the history of the legendary Air Max into a stunning cutaway print.
The Nike Air Max designed by Tinker Hatfield was released in 1987, introducing the first trainer to offer a window to the sole, that is the airbags forming the basis of air technology. According to Hatfield, he was inspired to show the internal structure of the sneakers by the building of Centre Pompidou in Paris. Even though initially they thought that the visible air technology would become a failure on the market, it turned out to be a huge hit. On the drawing of illustrator Malik Thomas, the story starts a little earlier: we get to check out the most important milestones from the invention of vulcanized rubber in 1839 through the development of the air technology to the debut of the Air Jordan (of course on Michael Jordan’s feet). And of course it wouldn’t be the same without pop culture references: Bruce Lee, Kanye West, Virgil Abloh and Pharrell Williams are also featured on the precisely crafted illustration.
