Puskás Arena’s wayfinding system receives a Red Dot award

A Hungarian project triumphed at Red Dot, the world’s most prestigious communication design contest. It was the wayfinding system and visual identity of Puskás Arena, the most modern multifunctional experience stadium with the greatest capacity in Central Europe that received the prominent award. Graphasel Design Studio received the recognition of a twenty-four-member jury of internationally recognized experts for the third time in a row this year. The Hungarian team won in the wayfinding category, where no Hungarian projects have been awarded before.

Puskás Arena was opened to the audience in November 2019, at the Hungary-Uruguay opening game. The construction of the arena was supervised by government commissioner and secretary of state responsible for the development of Budapest and the capital agglomeration Balázs Fürjes. As told by Balázs Fürjes, they provided five key points to the designers to create the interiors of the arena: to make the arena a world champion on the inside, too, to make the interior design spectacular and user friendly at once, to make it an exciting meeting of past and present, as well as to create something timeless and uniquely Hungarian at the same time. They managed to realize all this on a world-class level, as also proven by the Red Dot award – the secretary of state adds.

The Red Dot Design Award was established in 1955 – the experts of design and communication have been selecting the winners out of thousands of applicants every year since then. In the category won by Puskás Arena this year, last year’s winner was the public transportation system of Stockholm.

Wayfinding is the internal orientation system of buildings, helping visitors navigate and find their way with signs and symbols that are easy to understand and follow. Wayfinding does not only include the system of signs, as it also determines the entire visual identity of the public building.

Graphasel Design Studio has won numerous international awards over the past years, including two Red Dot design awards with their Opera Gin Budapest label and with the packaging designs of Dubicz Winery. The studio was responsible for the design of the Budapest office of Google, the entire visual identity of the Fina world championship 2017, the tourism image of Budapest and Hungary, as well as the visual identities of many pastry shops, restaurants and hotels.
