The KISKAKAS is at Toldiban again

The KISKAKAS (Little Rooster) is crowing again, the event of MOME Anim, aka the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Animation department, is on at Toldi again. On the 27th of November, the audience can watch the diploma films of the MA graduates of 2019 as the special edition of the yearly Kiskakas Filmapok (film days) at Toldi Movie Theatre.

The works created are yet again diverse, and exciting regarding the execution and genre as well. The themes included books, gameplans, short films, there was a technological experiment, philosophical questioning, precise introspection, lyrical travels within into the past, building worlds, and playful reflections to the current Hungarian reality. Kádár Melinda created A forrás és a torony (The source and the tower) 2D digital animation inspired by the cycle of the destruction and rebirth of an ecosystem. Orosz Judit’s Odakint (Out there) and Győrfi Ágnes’ Szélfogó (Break-wind) were created with 2D animation technology, and Azevedo Andrade Natália’s film: Tövisek és szálkák (Thorns and splinters) created by mixed techniques, are dealing with childhood, childhood issues that were inspired by memories or traumas that span over generations. 

Many artists chose dreams and psychological themes. Debreczeni Zoltán’s film,Sola, created by mixed techniques is telling a story about a woman who is trying to deal with work-related stress and nightmares, in Szöllősi Anna’s Helfer, a 2D digital rotoscope animation, a relationship unfolds between a young woman with anxiety and nightmares and a helper, Ászity Boglárka’s Alvások (Sleepings) 2D animation is her own personal and universal analysis about her sleeping habits. Among the graduates, there were some who were experimenting with the border areas.  Simon József’s Biom is the test version of a videogame, with an accompanying trailer that introduces the universe where the game is set, Korcsok Lili’s book, Homeosztázis (Homeostasis) and it’s trailer guide the audience into a world where all the elements were created by the artist, Darabos Éva’s Pá’ kis panelom! (Bye my little panel flat) 2D animation closes the lineup, it is a humorous yet surreal panorama about the main character’s panel life that is becoming the past. 

The newly graduated, young artists are all true to themselves and having both the professional and artistic self-knowledge, they speak to us in their own voice in their films, making this year’s KISKAKAS a breathtaking and diverse one and a half hours promising. 

Before the show, you can have a look at the GRAFIX exhibition and fare in the lobby of the movie theatre. From 5:30 pm the MOME graduates and current students are welcoming anyone who is interested, with diverse print creations. Before the premiere, you can buy postcards with Ászity Boglárka’s, Debreczeni Zoltán’s, Győrfi Ágnes’, and Orosz Judit’s films picture-frames. You can find our current students’ limited edition posters, laser-printed stickers made with zine-rej, riso techniques that were created as a side- or complementary project to their university works.

Biom is the test version of a videogame and an intro video. On an alien planet, the predator of the micro-biosphere is hunting down unprotected, and harmless beings. The protagonist, Bo, has a bubble surrounding hi and protecting him, and he can fight back when in need.

When the spring that has been feeding the ecosystem, dries up, the cries for help commence a process that will turn the world’s every resource into building a tower. This might seem destructive at first, but the tower’s only purpose than to restart the spring.

Three bored, neglected children’s locked up life is filled with imaginary adventures until one day, they try to go out into the outside world. Their busy mother seems completely distant emotionally. As the children grow older, and the mother’s routine becomes more and more tiring and soon the secrets of the mysterious house unfold.

The main element of my diploma work was creating a book, which guides us to a world where I created all the elements, yet it does not give an exact answer tot he reader/audience about why the things work the way they work. It gives free space for imagination so that everyone can complement the fractional stories, pictures in their thoughts.

The animation Sleepings was inspired by my own and family-related experiences, memories. The memory fragments presented in the film even though they are very personal, these transmit experiences that are easy to relate to by anyone and they touch something universal about our sleeping habits.

The “Helfer” portrays the relationship between a young woman tormented by anxiety and a helper in a surreal world, through symbolic happenings. The woman suffers from reoccurring nightmares, to which she wants to find a final solution. The helper offers alternative opportunities, the make the woman face her deepest fears.

A child’s experiences about the time he/she spent in the countryside with the grandparents come to life in haiku-like pictures.  The relationship between the child’s soul and nature are personal, yet universal, symbolic and general at the same time. The scenes of the film are mosaic fragments that make up a whole in the creation.

The main character gets to know that soon she has to move out of her current home, a panel flat. Hearing the unsettling news result in a flood of emotions. Her farewell teras turn into monoliths heavy as concrete, and it’s impact initiates a surreal panorama about the life at the building estate that is becoming the past.
