Application is now open to this year’s Hungarian Design Award

Similar to previous years, the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office (HIPO), by teaming up with the Ministry for Innovation and Technology and the Hungarian Design Council, has announced the Hungarian Design Award competition in 2021 as well.

The most prestigious design award in the country has been announced by the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office, the Ministry for Innovation and Technology and the Hungarian Design Council for the 42nd time this year. Over the past years, the concept and toolset of design has integrated into the everyday work of Hungarian businesses and institutions in an ever broader scope. The Hungarian Design Award was called to life to promote this process and to encourage a more goal-oriented and efficient use of design. Designers, manufacturers, traders, distributors and clients are all welcome to apply to the competition. Those interested can apply to the call with products and services created in the past three years. The award’s purpose is to acknowledge outstanding design performances and to encourage the application of Hungarian design. Applicants can submit their projects in the categories of product, visual communication as well as drawings and student project.

The evaluation committee made up of recognized experts will evaluate the projects submitted in two rounds, according to evaluation criteria including quality of format, novelty and originality, user-oriented design, market competitiveness and meeting sustainability requirements. The jury is made up of the following members: Tamás Árkossy (licensed woodworking engineer, titular associate professor, owner and executive manager of Árkossy Furniture), Attila Gaszt (executive manager of GIA Form Kft.), Mihály Hefkó DLA (Noémi Ferenczy and Miklós Ybl Award winning interior designer, titular college professor at the Budapest Metropolitan University, member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts), Orsolya Kecskés (goldsmith, jewelry designer, founding member of Art Jewelry Night Budapest and EightDays Design), Pál Koós habil. Noémi Ferenczy Award winning industrial designer, university professor, Vice Rector of Education at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Deputy Chairman of the Hungarian Design Council), Dr. Emma Lógó, (ergonomist, assistant professor at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics), Tamás Marcell DLA (graphic designer, associate professor, BA Head of Department at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design), Erika Sütő (Hungarian Design Award winning silicate industrial designer, jewelry designer, Studio of Young Designers Association). The makers of the award-winning works receive a certificate and a cash prize. The awards ceremony will be held in the fall of 2021, in the framework of the Design Week program series.

“For the Hungarian industry, it’s not only innovativeness that is important for maintaining and increasing competitiveness, but adopting a design approach, too, which could significantly facilitate the usability of the given products and services and the comprehensibility of their operation. Other works judged as excellent by the jury will be invited to participate in the exhibition where award-winning projects are presented to the public. The awards will be handed over in the framework of a gala ceremony at the exhibition opening. We hope we’ll be able to host this event in person in spite of the epidemic,” said HIPO President Gyula Pomázi.

Those interested have until midnight April 30 to submit their projects to the organizers electronically, to the mfd@hipo.gov.hu e-mail address.
